After todays’ three races Szabolcs Majthenyi & András Domokos from Hungary have jumped to the top of the leader board on the Flying Dutchman European Championship.
Tough conditions greated the fleet on the water today. The 20-25 knots northerly gusts have kept 7 crews on shore. Some were brave but unlucky as many capsized and a few dismasted mainly during race 1.
After windless yesterday It was a complete adrenalin rush for those who managed to remain in the battle, the have sailed 3 complete races today.
It was an excellent start of race 1 for the Hungarian top team and after rounding the top mark in 1st position, the managed to extend their lead with a great spinnaker run. Not all were determined enough to hoist the colourful downwind sails. Shaking of the chasing pack consisting of mainly German crews, they also had to face with technical difficulties in the 2nd upwind, but regardless they managed to pull in victory of the 1st race.
Conditions were calming down for the start of race 2 but it also meant 20-30 degrees shifts of gusts which made this race a very tactical one. Nerves were in the right place for the Borowski brothers from Germany who lead through the whole race and holding a firm grip on victory till the end. Behind them the Bojsen-Möller cousins finished 2nd and there was some extreme tight battle for the 3rd place as only 5 inches have separated the Majthenyi & Domokos duo from the Burkert & Schwade crew on the finish line in favour of the Hungarians.
The 13 times world champions were unstoppable in race 5, with almost perfect sailing they claimed easy victory upon the Borowski brothers and the Schiffer & Wenten duo from Germany.
After a great day of sailing the Majthenyi & Domokos duo have stepped up on top the overall leader board, behind them are the Danish Bojsen-Möller cousins, and with their great performance today the Borowski brothers have made their way up to 3rd position.
Further 4 races are planned in the remaining 2 days of the regatta.
